1. You don’t need to show up for your first meeting with a divorce attorney with all your tax returns, credit card receipts and detailed financial documents.

2. However…  you do need to tell the attorney if your spouse has or has not already filed for divorce. If he or she has filed, tell your attorney who is representing your spouse and bring a copy of the initial pleading so the attorney can see if it is a basic, benign, no-fault filing or alleges wrongdoing of some kind on your part such as cruelty, adultery, fraud, or other complaints.

3. Other than that, you and your attorney will be getting to know each other in this first meeting. He or she will want to know about your background, the issues involved in the divorce, and what solution you are seeking. What are your priorities in obtaining this divorce?
